Welcome to Our Practice

Headaches, Migraines, TMJ Pain Dentist Bergen County NJ

Congratulations, you have taken the first step toward receiving the comprehensive care you have been seeking.  Welcome to the world of Neuromuscular Dentistry, where many craniofacial pain patients find relief.  Relief from chronic headaches, migranes, tmj pain, ear pain and muscle pain. We have created this web site because Dr. Sousa knows how hectic life can be and he wants his patients to be informed decision makers, making educated decisions about their health and well-being.

Many patients referred to Dr. Sousa have expressed their frustration with many years of suffering from unresolved craniofacial pain. They have described chronic pain related to head and neck muscles, headaches, earaches and jaw pain. The acute symptoms have been treated well. However, the stability of the craniomandibular relationship had not been evaluated. The acute symptoms returned and the subsequent chronic pain caused stress, fatigue and adversely affected the patient’s quality of life. Many of these patients have an undiagnosed craniomandibular dysfunction and temporomandibular joint derangement.

The relationship of the moveable mandible to the fixed cranium is the critical diagnostic concept. It requires the knowledge of anatomy, form and function of the temporomandibular joints. As the closure of a door into its frame is dependent upon the stability of the hinge, so is the closure of the mandible dependent on the stability of the TMJ. The unstable joints and mal-alignment of the jaw to the skull causes stress and chronic fatigue of the head and neck muscles. The persistent stress and fatigue causes chronic pain, possibly leading to depression.

Dr. Sousa’s practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of craniofacial pain with related temporomandibular derangement. He may request a TMJ MRI scan to determine the structural integrity of the joints, determine the Piper Classification of a derangement and recommend treatment. Treatment solely with a commonly placed dental appliance (splint, NTI) simply does not restore the craniomandibular relationship and the patient remains at risk for a more serious joint derangement and fatiguing chronic pain. His treatment protocol stabilizes and maintains the craniomandibular relationship without the dependency of a splint. When Dr. Sousa restores harmony and stability, the chronic pain patient is extremely relieved to realize they do not have to live with "the pain" any longer.

Dr. Sousa has completed extensive training with Dr. Peter Dawson and Dr. Mark Piper at the Center for Advanced Dental Study.  As a Scholar Alumnus of the Dawson Academy, Dr. Sousa has achieved the Academy’s highest level of training. The Dawson Academy is internationally recognized for the advanced education, training, and philosophy of care that result in more consistent, predictable and comprehensive health for every patient.  It is the concept of care that saves patients from years of pain, time lost and expensive costs for multiple and repeated treatments. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, please call today and discover what he already knows about your pain.

Pain relief requires relaxed muscles, a stable bite and stress-free jaw joints.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry believes excellence in dentistry is dependent upon a harmonious relationship between relaxed muscle function and stable jaw movements - a comfortable bite. As a neuromuscular cosmetic dentist, Dr. Sousa understands a beautiful smile is dependent upon the healthy function of this complex system. His diagnostic/management of craniofacial pain (headaches), TMJ pain, snoring and sleep apnea is augmented by cosmetic dentistry to restore the beautiful smiles of former pain patients.

Dr. John Sousa graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Dental Medicine, where he later taught as an assistant professor of restorative dentistry. He is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, The American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, The American Academy of Pain Management, The American Equilibration Society, The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and The American Dental Association.  Dr. Sousa has been acknowledged by the Consumer's Research Council of America's "Guide to America's Top Dentists,  201 Magazine's "Bergen's Top Cosmetic Dentists",  NJ TopDocs "NJ Top Dentists", and Best in New York Medicine's "Top Doc Award".

Dr. Sousa and his Team excel in treating patients requiring difficult comprehensive full mouth rehabilitation that many dentists are reluctent to attempt.  Though many years of advanced training, they apply their combined skills in Occlusion, Orthodontics, TMJ Pain and Cosmetic Dentistry to create exquisitely beautiful smiles every day.  Dr. Sousa welcomes the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience, helping to care for his patients.
